Talala

Just north of the small town of Talala near Oologah Lake, the Winganon Space Capsule has been a roadside oddity for over 60 years. In 1959, cement mixer overturned, leaving behind a heavy load of dry cement. Over the years, artists and local citizens have painted the mixer many times. In 2011, it was redesigned into a space capsule with the NASA logo, rocket thrusters and shiny aluminum paint.

Learn about the town’s history at the Talala Historical museum, or check the event calendar for hometown celebrations like the Talala Fall Festival or the Talala Woodpecker Run. In fact, Talala takes its name after the Cherokee term “ta-la-la” meaning woodpecker.
