Checotah

Get a dose of history, outdoor recreation and country music with a trip to Checotah. Visit the Honey Springs Battlefield to learn about the largest battle in Indian Territory during the Civil War. The engagement at Honey Springs was the largest of more than 107 documented hostile encounters in Indian Territory. Today, the battlefield is listed in the National Register of Historic Places and is a National Historic Landmark. Each year, the public is welcomed to witness a re-enactment of the battle, complete with encampments, cannons and actors in authentic uniforms on opposing sides.

Lake Eufaula State Park is another large draw to Checotah. Spend the day exploring the state’s largest lake, then head back to the park to camp beneath the stars. Tent and RV campsites, cabins and even yurts are available for overnight lodging. This popular park also offers a heated fishing dock, a disc golf course and a nature center. Checotah is also the childhood home of country superstar Carrie Underwood.
