Cruise the
McClellan-Kerr Arkansas River Navigation System (MCKARNS) and enjoy the
445 - mile waterway which enters the Mississippi at river mile 599
above New Orleans. From towering rock cliffs to beautiful pastoral
scenes, from thousands of monarch butterflies in the spring to deer and
migratory waterfowl in the fall, the waterway is a wonderland for the
senses.
Step into history where the Osage tribe bartered with American and
French traders & trappers at "the three forks" (convergence of the
Arkansas, Verdigris and Grand rivers) in the 1800's, to landings along
the river used by the Five Civilized Tribes as they were removed to
Oklahoma.
Experience the five locks on the Oklahoma section of the waterway.
There is no charge for vessels (either recreational or industrial)
passing through the locks. Each lock chamber is 110' wideX600' long and
can handle an 8 barge tow.
In Oklahoma alone, there are 145 river miles of adventure, attractions
and activities. Towns of interest along the waterway include Catoosa,
Muskogee, Gore and Sallisaw. The Cherokee Casino Resort and Golf Club
is located in Catoosa, Muskogee attractions include the Azalea
Festival, Chili Cook Off, museums and Three Forks Harbor which provides
improved boating access to the Arkansas, Verdigris and Grand Rivers and
the waterway system of the U.S.
Three Forks Harbor at
waterway mile 392.4 (in Muskogee at the intersection of HWY 62 and the
MCKARNS) offers recreational vessel docking space in transient and
rental covered slips, and a fully automated fuel system (gas and
diesel) available 24/7/365. A 40-foot boat launch is located on the
east end of the 20 acre harbor along with a 100 ton marine travel lift.
Arrowhead Marina and Boat Sales manages the Three Forks Harbor marina, provides boat sales and service and marine supplies.
Ft Gibson's Military Historical site, a reconstructed 1824 log fort, is only 3 nautical miles up the Grand River. Traveling via HWY 251A the fort is five road miles from Three Forks Harbor, Muskogee. Also close by is the Ft Gibson U.S. National Cemetery.
The original Cherokee Courthouse is located in Gore and has a great gift shop! In Sallisaw you'll find the Kerr Lake Reservoir, Brushy Lake State Park, fishing tournaments, a racino and nearby, Sequoyah's home.
Applegate Cove Marina provides fuel, marine maintenance and marine supplies at Waterway mile marker 340 (8 road miles south of Sallisaw).
You'll find plenty of hotels and restaurants along this waterway to make your trip comfortable and relaxing!
